Representing Our Community: Pleasant Grove VFD Attends 2026 SFFMA Conference in Waco

Last week, members of the Pleasant Grove Volunteer Fire Department traveled to Waco, Texas, to attend the 150th Annual State Firefighters’ and Firemen’s Association (SFFMA) Conference. This annual event brings together fire departments from across the state for intensive training, networking, and legislative business that shapes the future of the volunteer fire service in Texas.

Our department’s attendance ensures that we continue to bring the highest level of safety, knowledge, and efficiency back home to our community.

Advanced Training & Shaping the Future

Throughout the week, our members participated in critical educational tracks designed to improve our local emergency response capabilities. Key training sessions included an in-depth medical provider review to sharpen our first-responder skills, as well as specialized sessions on ISO (Insurance Services Office) ratings—knowledge that directly impacts our department’s operations and can help lower local property insurance premiums for our neighbors.

Beyond the classroom, our members attended the General Sessions, actively participating in the discussions and decisions that steer the direction of the volunteer fire service statewide. We also had the privilege of attending a powerful, motivational session led by legendary Chief Rick Lasky, focused on maintaining pride, ownership, and deep dedication within the fire service.

Proving Our Grit: A Podium Finish in the Gauntlet

The SFFMA conference is also a proving ground for firefighter fitness and skills. This year, we had one member represent Pleasant Grove VFD in The Gauntlet—a brutal, physically demanding challenge that tests a firefighter’s endurance, strength, and agility under pressure.

We are proud to announce that Chief Mischnick took home 3rd Place Overall and secured 2nd Place in the 40–49 age division. Competing at this level highlights the physical readiness and determination our leadership brings to the field every day.

Exploring New Innovations

The exhibit hall offered a look at the latest in firefighting technology and safety. One of our own members, Training Chief Mahan, pulled double duty at the conference, not only participating in the events but also representing HEN Nozzles as a vendor. The department also evaluated several promising firefighter-specific fitness and training aids to help keep our crew in peak operational shape.
