Chief Scott Mischnick of Pleasant Grove VFD recently had the opportunity to attend the SFFMA 149th Annual Training Conference, held this year in Frisco, TX, from June 19th through the 22nd. Chief Mischnick took advantage of a wide variety of training sessions, covering everything from essential administrative issues like TCFP reciprocity to critical fireground skills such as Search & Rescue. The conference was highlighted by a powerful keynote address on the topic of “service,” delivered by Daniel DeYear, Retired Deputy Chief from Dallas Fire & Rescue.
As a delegate representing Pleasant Grove VFD, Chief Mischnick actively participated in the conference’s business sessions. These important meetings involved the election of the State Firefighters and Fire Marshals Association Executive Board and discussions and votes on several proposed amendments to the SFFMA Constitution and By-Laws.
We were also proud to see other members of Upshur County ESD #1 in attendance! Bradley and Amber Hill from the Gilmer Fire Department joined the conference, and we extend a huge congratulations to their daughter, Elyssa Hill, who was elected the 2025-2026 SFFMA Mascot!
The conference wasn’t solely focused on training and business. Friday afternoon featured exciting Firefighter Games! Scott Mischnick and Bradley Hill teamed up to compete in the Pumper Races. In individual competitions, Scott Mischnick and Amber Hill each showcased their skills in the Firefighter Gauntlet, with both emerging victorious in their respective divisions!
The final day of the conference included the deeply moving Annual SFFMA Memorial, a ceremony dedicated to honoring member firefighters who have fallen since last year’s conference.
Looking towards the future, Longview Firefighter Kelcey Trotty, who was recognized as the 2025 SFFMA Firefighter of the Year, announced his candidacy for the SFFMA Executive Board. His election will be voted on at next year’s conference in Waco, TX.
